Some were able to take early retirement, and did that. The 2 you speak of, 1, I suspect, is white, and the other is Asian, to judge by the name... They do not check the boxes, so are not hired. DEI/affirmative action hires, or illegals,for non-skilled labor, check the boxes and get the jobs.
When applying for a job with a prospective employer, you must get around HR so you can directly communicate with your prospective boss.
Corporate HR is broken and useless. As a manager and director, I kept them away from the applicants and the process. I haven't met anyone who enjoys the hiring process.
Since the 1980's, I have not found a job by "cold calling" - answering job opening ads. The two things that worked whether I was young or old: 1, referral to management by a current employee. 2, using the services of a "head hunter".
The guy looking for custodial related work could look into opening his own janitorial service.
Note - if you are a young person with no skills, you must get some skills!

As self employed tech looking for my next contract, this is what I’ve noticed.
1. Companies are only implementing projects already started
2. Companies want w2 contracts instead of 1099 due to new policy changes (this hurts small business and increases tax revenue)
3. Companies not willing to hire on visa
4. Most jobs are hybrid on site, fully remote is going away yet I know many workers only looking for fully remote
5. Permanent jobs want highly skilled, not willing to train (this has been going on for years)
6. Background checks are more extensive and even for contract jobs the process is taking months instead of days
7. Rates and salaries are way down. Only going up for jobs in remote places because people won’t sell their house and move there.
