I've been told that the Arc of the Covenant was moved from the underground cave to third level basement of the Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem due to Moslem digging and excavation in and around the temple mount. A NY Univ archeology Professor who has done extensive work in Israel was invited to see it in the basement of the Museum. She said the two stone tables were made of red granite with writing on all 4side of the table. They were about the size of a large man's hand. The script was early Semitic and was written long hand not block symbols. The jar of manna was contained dust. and Aron's rod had had leafed and budded but it was preserves perfectly as dried flower.
Not sure the story is true, but the details add some credibility.
The exact location does not matter but it's clear they do have it. The last time I was in Israeli had a privet chat with one the Rabbis from the Temple Institute, he said they are ready to rebuild, they are waiting to be given the authorization and within 24 hrs they will start laying the stones.
