No matter what happens re: Iran the price of oil is going up over the next decade. I doubt we see $65 again. But if we do it will be just a backtest before it heads higher. And once it does there will be no looking back. As with gold, $2000 was an inflection point, never to be revisited. $100 oil will be the same.
Indeed. You can see where oil is headed by looking at gold and silver. In the prior two real bull markets for metals, 1970s and 2000-2012 oil followed the metals. And over the past 150 years, oil has tracked silvers price with a .86 correlation. That’s not perfect. But it’s a good indicator of where oil is headed in the future.
The tripwire everyone is going to have to watch is if China sends “advisors” to Iran, basically used as human shields. Russia won’t bother, because they don’t really need Iran, but China does. If they send advisors, it will mean they are willing to fight for the oil. I don’t really expect that China is going to be able to win a direct military confrontation, but they have an awful strong presence in the world economy. A complete cessation of trade or some other last ditch poison pill would probably be on the horizon at that point, and they have been around a hell of a lot longer than anyone else has. They can absorb a lot of misery and still endure. It will be very interesting if that happens.
That's only half the story...The US has reportedly offered a ceasefire to Iran, which rejected it...Iran having the upper hand despite Trump's numerous lies...Iran is demanding payment for all the damage done...Trump's ego won't allow him to pay, so US and Israel, which are the ones running out of missiles, and have very long and slow supply lines...In terms of our Gulf allies, many of them have been forced to shutdown LNG plants and oil storage, which is at its limits...This can't be fixed by draining existing storage...and that supply will run out pretty quickly too....Don't bet on a quick turnaround....As to Trump's delusional notion of seizing the Strait, it won't work without major assets in the vicinity, and Iran can just dump a ton of mines and sink a couple of ships in the Strait....

Here in flyover country I paid $3.09/gal today and I actually saw 2.99/gal down the street. Hasn't really changed much compared to pre Trump prices. Not a big difference one way or the other for us at the moment. Not like the seventies when gas prices doubled in 73 and then again a few years later. That was a shock wave that forever changed our standard of living.
