Entrepreneurialism, manufacturing and new business endeavors could flourish if instead the right conditions were to prevail here versus taking punitive measures internationally in an already de-stabilized world economy that is comprised more and more of nations who have fled the dollar's hegemony and are seeking affiliation in the BRICS System.
Promotion of free trade and mutually-beneficial exchanges should be the goal (where is the art of the deal - this has the appearance of unstable thinking and lack of cohesive concurrence and assessment of the pros and cons by those vested in the Constitution with weighing in on the kinds of complex and heavily impactful decisions behind policies....not trade wars that are going to further isolate and stigmatize an already weakened and vulnerable population here who continue to observe the periodic "selection" processes to supposedly gain "representative governance" but who are inevitably ignored or worse in favor of repeated strategies to transfer wealth from those with the least to those with the most.....while those who are responsibly, independently and dutifully owning and operating businesses, those who are the backbone of the country and who comprise the key players in many communities are once again treated to the shaft.
Agreed. I understand that Trump wants to discourage businesses from heading overseas and increase our production capacity here at home. And that is definitely a crucial need. However from a business standpoint, who knows how long these tariffs will last and if the next administration will reverse them or not. It’s a huge investment to move business back to the USA from overseas based on a transitory whim. As a business owner I’d rather eat the costs for four years than lose when the next administration changes the rules again.
I don’t have a clue what the impact of tariffs will be.
But here is what I do know with 100% certainty.
Tariffs are applied on the price that the original manufacturer charges the first stop in the distribution chain. Tariffs are not applied on the existing retail price.
What is likely to happen is that retailers are going to pass along their increased cost, and then add more money on top of that and blame the tariffs. And they will get away with it. Because the talking heads (and sadly in this case you are in this camp) are spreading fear porn about how tariffs work.
I could explain it in excruciating detail. This example should suffice. Walmart sells sweatpants for 9.99. The original manufacturer in China sells those sweatpants to a distributor in Hong Kong for $1.00. The tariff is applied at that point, adding 25 cents to the cost the distributor paid for the product. If that tariff is passed along the entire supply chain, Walmart adds the tariff, the sweat pants should now retail for $10.24. That’s a 2.5% increase. Not 25%.
It's still an increase in cost of merchandise for Walmart which would be a hit to their bottom line if they don't increase the price tag for consumers at least that much. Which still hurts the consumer. Whether it's 2.5% or 25% it's still an adjustment to my monthly budget.
In the end none of theses tariffs matter. It’s now all out economic war. Countries are going to have to choose sides. And when they choose the US side they will make deals and the tariffs will go away. If they choose the non U.S. side they will increase trade with each other and decrease or eliminate trade with the US.
Only China really matters and it remains to be seen how they react.
